When to go

Season & rate guide.

Peak Season
Dec – Apr
Highest (book 4–6 months ahead)

Dry, sunny, calm seas

Christmas–New Year attract +40% surcharges. Mid-Jan to end-Mar is best value in peak.

Shoulder Season
May, Oct – Nov
20–35% below peak

Mixed — some rain, calmer at times

May sees the monsoon arrive on the west side; east-facing resorts stay drier. November is underrated.

Green Season
Jun – Sep
Lowest (up to 50% off rack rate)

South-west monsoon — rain, bigger surf

Surf season on the west coast. Manta rays peak in Baa Atoll Jul–Nov. Dive viz still excellent.

Hidden cost

Transfers: the number nobody shows you.

The transfer cost is the most commonly omitted figure in Maldives resort pricing. A seaplane from Velana International to Baa Atoll runs USD 480–620 return per person. Add two adults and it rivals the cost of a budget night in the resort itself.

Transfer cost by method (2026 estimates)

MethodTypical cost (return/pax)DurationAtolls served
SeaplaneUSD 480–64020–45 minBaa, Ari, Lhaviyani, far atolls
SpeedboatUSD 60–18030–90 minN. Malé, S. Malé, nearby islands
Domestic flight + speedboatUSD 200–3802–4 hrs totalAddu, Laamu, southern atolls
Ferry (public)USD 1–530 min – 2 hrsMalé, Hulhumalé, guesthouses

Rule of thumb: if seaplane transfer exceeds 25% of your accommodation budget per person per night, consider switching to a North Malé Atoll resort accessible by speedboat — you'll spend the savings on better food or an extra dive.
