# Japan Visa for Australians: Visa Exemption, 90-Day Stay and Passport Rules

Japan is not a visa-on-arrival country for Australians: it is visa-exempt. If you hold an Australian passport and are visiting for a short stay, you do not apply for any visa at all.

Do Australians need a visa for Japan?

No, not for a short stay. Here is the official position at a glance.

ItemWhat the official sources say
Visa needed? No, for short-term stays (Consulate-General of Japan, Sydney)
Length of stayUp to 90 days
Allowed purposesTourism, business meetings, conferences, visiting family and friends
WorkNot allowed, paid or unpaid (Embassy FAQ)
Passport validityMust stay valid for your whole stay; six months is not required
FeeNone for the exemption

Does Australian permanent residency count?

The Consulate-General in Sydney is clear that the exemption depends on your nationality, not your Australian residency. Australian permanent residents travelling on another country's passport must check the rules for that passport.

How long must my passport be valid for Japan?

The Embassy of Japan says your passport does not need six months' validity, but it must remain valid during your stay and when you leave Japan. The Embassy recommends checking your airline's rules if you will travel with less than six months left.

When would an Australian need a Japanese visa?

Stays longer than 90 days, working holidays, and any paid activity need a visa. The Embassy notes that you generally cannot change from tourist status to a work visa once you are in Japan.

What do I fill in before landing?

The Embassy of Japan says visa-exempt travellers can fill out their disembarkation card when they register on Visit Japan Web, or fill one out at the airport.

Where can I check other countries?
